System Center Essentials RC1 Now Available02/20/2007 - Microsoft announced availability of System Center Essentials 2007 RC1 on the connect site. This release includes a number of improvements, including availability of the much awaited Service Provider Management Pack and related deployment resources. System Center Essentials is Microsoft's flagship systems and operations management platform for the mid-market enterprise, combining features of MOM, SMS and WSUS into a single console for managing most aspects of system monitoring and maintenance. Also of note was public availability of Service Provider Management Pack and related resources, which allow managed service providers to remote monitor and administer client environments without the need for VPN. |

New MOMResources Site Beta12/05/2006 - I am happy to say I have the content of momresources.org up on a new platform (with a new name) so content is searchable and includes syndication (rss) feeds so users can keep up with new content more easily. However, as we move from MOM into the new System Center family, a host of new features and tight product integration across the platform will change the way we solve today's operational challenges in the enterprise. That being said,
I am enlisting some assistance from pros in the community to allow
expansion of the site to cover most components of the System Center
Suite as they come online. The new site also allows anyone to upload
their own custom solutions to share with the operations and systems

Windows Base OS Management Pack Withdrawn
10/9/2006 - The Base Operating System Management Pack
(05.0.3500.0000) released to a few weeks ago has been
temporarily withdrawn due to technical issues currently being
investigated. The former version of the Management Pack is
available on the link until such time as the MP is re-released
HERE.
Needless to say, if you have not already deployed the new version of this MP to your production environment, refrain from doing so pending a fix for this issue. |

MOM Data Warehouse (SCDW) Reindexing Script6/15/2006 - An unofficial answer to the request for guidance in MOM SystemCenterRepoorting database maintenance is now available.
A great reindexing script for
the SystemCenterReporting database was shared with me yesterday.
I wanted to test it quickly before sharing. While it is
UNSUPPORTED, UNWARRANTED, etc
by Micrsoft, it was written by an internal MS resource close to
the product, so it is quite sophisticated in it's makeup. The
script actually works over a 7-day cycle to balance the load of
re-indexing SCDW tables based on their fragmentation level.
There is however, a single command that can be issued to force
the script to run in a single cycle.
The Readme.txt from the author explains both script logic and usage in clear detail. I did quickly test it successfully on both SQL 2000 and 2005 platforms. Get a copy HERE. |

TechEd 2006 Conference Launch6/14/06 - The Microsoft TechEd 2006 Conference was in full swing Monday 6/12. Sources tell me it is a bit light on management technologies this year (not surprising on the heels of a very successful Management Summit in April). Alert Escalation in Notification Workflow5/3/06 - You may have seen the article in Technet Magazine 3/06 on the MOM Solution Accelerators. In the article detailed fea to be released in the next version of Notification Workflow including Automatic Alert Escalation... but when NWSA 2.1 was released in late March, the feature was noticeably absent. A Microsoft source reports that development on the feature was dropped, and will unfortunately not be available in future releases of NWSA. But no worries, Brian Wren did fill the gap with the introduction of a pair of Alert Escalation scripts at MMS 2006. Get them HERE. |
